It would take us West to Powick Bridge and then to Ripple Field, through Tewkesbury, then Lansdowne Hill and Roundway Down before heading back up to the midlands with a stop off at Stow on the Wold. In all it took the best part of three days, with two nights rest at a couple of Premier Inns along the way.

Powick Bridge.

Wednesday saw us arrive at Powick Bridge just after lunch. Our main guide was Bill, who did an excellent job of recounting this first engagement of the English Civil War. Although much of the meadow area beyond had been developed, the small bridge and laneway still gave a good impression of what it must have been like.

The advancing Parliamentarian cavalry had come over the bridge, but the Royalists had lined the hedges at the side of the far track with dragoons. By causing confusion (and the Parliamentarians then needing to drive in more troops to clear the hedges) the Royalists had bought time for their troops in the meadow to form up. The battle itself had concluded with the Royalists charging the majority and forcing the Parliamentarians back, routing them through Powick and beyond.

No doubt the track itself had been widened over the years, and much of the hedging trimmed away. But it still gave a fair idea of what the troops must have experienced at the time.

Interestingly, there was a monument and sign for one of the final battles of the Civil War (Worcester) which had also involved the area around Powick Bridge. It just goes to show the significance of such small and innocuous looking places.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV3YrSeA4Dl9Jbemy2kkaH7XRjIgc8sEhkd2ZPyjH-qevyyJv8KQdWHek5s8FNCtkL6GzlzJfQklUrqWZhoxss4dzl1jezX3L3Y7dM3kXh3y6Pm8HuodIrz8wVUVcviPBfQcl2GkrLWmhQxO-psBCPYcWG0uABah0oNExWG8Vapb2xRd8PIY0tXwQ2jA/s4032/20220824_132543.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Parking next to Ripple Parish Hall we stepped onto the edge of the field right at the base of the Parliamentarian positions. Ripple Field is one of those battlefield locations that is luckily well preserved and you can afford yourself of an unimpeded view. It's easily identified due to the line of the two roads which created the left and right flanks of both armies.

Bill's presentation highlighted how, once more, the lanes and hedges had played a contributing factor. This time in allowing Royalist troops to infiltrate and threaten the Parliamentarian position on the high ground. Eventually forcing them to fall back.

Tewkesbury.

The Thursday morning saw us arise from a grand breakfast to take on Dave's tour of the Wars of the Roses battlefield at Tewkesbury. This particular tour was fairly well contained and accessed by being so close to the Cathedral and town centre. The town had recently held its own official commemoration, and so was still bedecked in banners and standards of the participants. Despite a light rain, Dave took us along the main positions of the Lancastrian defenders including the area of their terrible rout through 'bloody meadow'. The Cathedral holds the remains of several of the Lancastrian nobles and is an absolute wealth of history. Also nearby is a small museum with an upstairs room dedicated to the battle. It has a few artifacts and a model reconstruction which are well worth checking out.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXrHywl7GzANHgJVjduPpwKQSdZVNErKnvvGYYFB3q4bknVsaZ85fhqyyA9vYiesse9qHpylX-WQH3WZ8Qr6aQVvbo24PrZdtQGHTvMh0WaLYTO_qA1n18Dpd2fdWlDnVk7b5d-SphNRs40NPH6yphhAN2Ya854ZbqHEy3jLJyNWBIHUoIUKMlZCNrAA/s4032/20220825_095639.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The site is impressive partly due to its panoramic views across the Severn Valley. It must have been equally as daunting for the armies of Sir Ralph Hopton and Sir William Waller to have navigated these hills and then engage in desperate battle. After taking a brief respite in a parking area, Chris explained that Hopton had positioned his camp here at Tog Hill before moving across Freezing Hill, down into the valley and advancing up against the Parliamentarian forces on Lansdowne. The latter is extremely steep and I think gave everyone an appreciation of how difficult this advance would have been. There was quite a touching monument at the top of Lansdowne which marks the point where Sir Brevill Genville lost his life along with a panel explaining the battle.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It took us a while to find the location because there was a distinct lack of signposts. One of our vehicles ended up in Devizes, but we soon found the correct place with the aid of Google Maps. Roundway is also relatively unspoilt and Bill gave a stirring description of the likely position of the opposing armies. It was a beautiful clear day and imagining these two large armies arrayed before you wasn't difficult. One thing that struck me was the eventual collapse of the Parliamentarian cavalry on the left and just how far the rout would have been before careering over the steep banks toward the South West.

Our final visit to Stow on the Wold was a relaxed affair and mainly involved a walk around the village. The small cross to mark the final defeat (and Astley's exhausted surrender) was quite poignant. As was the church where many Royalist prisoners were kept over night after the battle.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmN2vYMW9hvAaS-A1RcA8H_lTGasm53V2X5h6KSN_cYEm1AeZkJWBliR7ETWUcVveF1tVRI2MpX1sppe9950evq8f0etpg0UBxeDIZynUx_Ym7EjmxK6kIzQHP1IPUnT46-ODZkfCdq-Y8bHftHg9EglLqD2NABCkVqD6dbbmgKGIDKrcbrW-J-P45LA/s5216/20220826_104609.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We both had a pile of unpainted Warlord Games figures and a copy each of Muskets and Tomahawks (first edition).

I painted up some French regulars and then bought a few packs of indians and French Marines from Galloping Major Miniatures. The latter are quite chunky models, so I've kept them in different units from other Warlord models I have. Warlord figures are nicely detailed but far slimmer than GM.

I've managed to blast through a lot of units by using GW Contrast Paints and Army Painter Speed Paints. I picked up the speed paint mega set from Partizan Wargames Show the other week. It was the last one left on the Caliver Books stall. I rate the speed paints very highly. An undercoat of GW Wraithbone and these colours really pop. Try them out if you get chance.

My French Force is almost complete, and now I'm moving on to the British. This last weekend I put the finishing touches to Lord Clifford's retinue and decided to see what the two armies would look like in the field.

If I cast my mind back this has taken me approximately two years, with the majority being done during lockdown in 2021. I'm very happy with the results so far (I'm going to carry on adding retinues) and I'm looking forward to putting on a large game at the club very soon.

For reference purposes, the figures are mainly Perry plastics and metal but with some Front Rank too. The artillery is Old Glory (their artillery packs are very affordable and look nice).

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhq0KGnveLjlEvqkn58lXyK3uc1-Oeov8Jmot8sFVQPHKoQxX8IkBSCXv6Ucj1QAJ3YUleGiMCZaniDPk8iEoiEiAmrrqXbwMo0uFO7XPX19Pos3ycgNiRWkWPeInvJrkg_pzZOL5YtFUajhAfmRWxrOtTPSq-NTW8azeDS8ePgY-ik4873inHgSKL1Yw=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; I've made a few test models and tweaked it to suit my 28mm WW2 collection. I've seen gaming tables in the past where the gamers have spent hours placing rocks and rubble - and while this provides great detail, it's just not practical for club games that are only played over a shorter time span. These here are made as individual piles, so you can just place or lift them fairly quickly. Something else to add, is the extremely low cost of what I've outlined here. It literally costs pennies for dozens of these terrain pieces, and i hope you'll agree, they look great.

You will need:

A roll of kitchen foil.

A can of black spray paint.

A can of brown spray paint.

Some acrylic light brown paint for drybrushing.

Some ink wash (either GW Agrax Earthshade, Nuln oil, Vallejo Sepia Immersion Dip or similar).

A bag of grit/rocks.

Some small mdf off-cuts, and/or some MDF 'bags of bricks' from Charlie Foxtrot models.

PVA.

First rip off a length of tin foil and crush it into shape on a flat work surface. My girlfriend bought us membership of English Heritage for my birthday and it was the first time we'd used it. The drive from Nottingham took just over an hour, and the last ten miles or so was just breathtaking as we followed the smaller B roads through the hills to the small village of Castleton where Peveril is situated.

Castleton is worth the journey itself and boasts some lovely small shops, Cafes and restaurants alongside some great walks. The trek through a side street and up to the Castle itself is very steep, so if you're a bit shaky physically it can be a challenge. Though there are a few seated stopping points along the way. Due to lockdown a part of the exhibition was closed but the Castle keep and grounds were all open to wander around.

The first thing that strikes you is the incredible view. The large Keep and some of the walls may be weather worn but they're testament to almost 1,000 years of medieval architecture. Built just after 1066 by William Peverel it's an easily identifiable Norman construction. Later it was received by Henry II in 1155 and strengthened (with the building of the Keep) and served mainly as an administrative center for the Peaks. I had a big spend at the Warlord HQ store when it reopened and found some great Bolt Action bargains in the sale bin. I also purchased the new British and Canadian starter army and D-Day books.

As I'm between jobs I've been getting lots of painting done and enjoying the good weather in the back garden. My mate Rob gave me half a dozen British Airborne figures and that's where it literally took off. Last time I checked I was closing in on around 80 infantry, along with a recce jeep squadron and both the 6lb and 17lb AT guns.

The hedges and trees in the pics are all by Last Valley, and the buildings are a mix of Sarissa and an Etsy purchase (the latter are not quite as good as Sarissa but they were very cheap at £20 for three buildings, and a quick way to fill up your table with terrain).

I'm looking forward to having some games with these when the club opens again.

Late 17th Century French cavalry regiment La Reine. All figures by Warfare Miniatures. I've decided on doing something our local club has so far never covered, with the hope that when this lockdown carry-on ends we'll be able to run some big Sunday games again.

I really loved painting these. They were done very quickly with contrast paints in probably half the time it'd usually take to do a cavalry regiment. I've bought two complete (metal) armies (the other is from Dixon Miniatures - I've always had a soft spot for their figures ever since I played with their ECW range years ago). The only slight quibble with both Dixon and Warfare is the weapon arms sometimes need to be attached, but the bonus is the slight difference in poses you can create.

There are several things that draw me to this period. First is the historical intrigue between the Anglo-Dutch, the French and a cast of others - which gives great scope for campaigns. The other is the sheer colour and array of styles and uniforms. Ever since I watched the TV series 'Versaille' I've been waiting for the fashionable return of the powdered wig!

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14302453918877303074noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074136687855286094.post-37318649431833068232021-02-02T10:17:00.000-08:002021-02-02T10:17:05.281-08:0028mm Visigoth Army

The 28mm Visigoth army I started at the beginning of lockdown is almost complete. The infantry are a kit-bashed mix of Gripping Beast, Warlord and Victrix (Viking) plastic figures. Also some extra Roman shields and heads I took from the GB Roman Light Cavalry box. The Command is from Footsore and all the Goth Cavalry are Gripping Beast.

I really enjoyed putting these together and painting them. So much variation. From what I read in the background, many of the Visigoths had seen service in the late Roman army so I wanted the collection to reflect that. I know there may be some quibbles over historical accuracy (regarding moustaches over beards) but I had such a large amount of plastics spare and unpainted it presented an opportunity to put them to good use in a single army. I suppose I'll have to do the Romans next!!

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14302453918877303074noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074136687855286094.post-16909184084018142912021-01-15T10:49:00.002-08:002021-01-15T10:50:37.647-08:0028mm Late Roman Cataphracts

These are some plastic Gripping Beast Late Roman Heavy Cavalry figures I was given by Dan at Wargames Illustrated. I'd finished a painting project for the magazine and they were in a bag along with some other random sprues and stuff. I'm now using them to form the basis of my Late Roman army, and I've already ordered some GB plastic infantry to go with them. The idea is to use them as either allies or foes of my Goths.

I painted the lances because I really wanted them to be as colourful and striking on the battlefield as possible. It reminded me of being about 12 years old and buying some 15mm minifig mounted medieval knights and using a similar colour scheme. I had no idea if it was historically accurate, but just decided that they looked nice.

As most hobbyists, I've used the continued lockdown to get as much painted as possible. Both for customers and myself. The only issue now is one of storage, because obviously a fully painted and based army takes up more room than if it's unpainted and chucked in a carrier bag somewhere.

Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14302453918877303074noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074136687855286094.post-70329037064532197252020-12-22T08:55:00.002-08:002020-12-22T08:57:56.759-08:00Update 28mm Goth Warband

I managed a fair bit of painting last weekend and completed a few more figures for my Goth and Late Roman Army. I followed Simon MacDowall's advice in a Wargames Illustrated article about Goths having loads of looted Roman equipment etc.

Despite trying to restrain myself with my holiday bonus payment from work, I did have a splurge and bought some Osprey books along with a Warlord Greek Starter Army and some Spartans. Having lived nearby for most of my formative years I'd come here quite often both on family and school trips. The latter was quite memorable for an incident which involved a teacher wishing to educate us about the defensive nature of the hillfort by forming us into attackers and defenders. Naturally being a group of rowdy school kids it erupted into a chaotic mass brawl on the earthen ramparts as we envisaged ourselves as bloodthirsty warriors intent on blood and glory.

The recent picnic was a far more relaxed and gentle affair I'll hasten to add. But other than the joyful delight of sitting in the summer sun and marvelling at the view, I also took the opportunity to take a few photos. As with anything like this my mind also starts to gravitate towards wargaming and things like "how would this look as a piece of modelling terrain?" etc etc.

Rather than repeat the history of the site in my rather inadequate way, I'll post the link here to the University of Leicester who have done some sterling work on the fort over the years. It's still astounding to me that excavations have shown occupation of the area going back to the Neolithic period:
A quick one today. The last few days has seen me adopt a strategy of 'grab it and paint it'. So, anything that was kicking around in a box for a while was undercoated and went on the painting table. I managed to complete a few Saga units of Vikings and Normans (picked up about three years ago from ebay) and these Boxer Rebellion figures from Victorious Miniatures. Note: I did paint the webbing in white rather than khaki. Just a personal preference.
Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14302453918877303074noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074136687855286094.post-12833383633010669092020-04-21T10:09:00.000-07:002020-04-21T10:10:12.585-07:0028mm Anglo Zulu War Figures and 4Ground Building

After being sidetracked by several part finished projects I finally got round to completing a few more of my Anglo Zulu War collection. I'd say this is now 99% done with only another 4Ground building and a handful of Zulus and Brits outstanding.

I'm blaming Wargames Illustrated for this foray into another period. I'd dropped into the WI office before Christmas with some painted buildings for them and before I left James had given me about ten plastic Zulu sprues from Warlord.

Along with the Warlord figures I managed to pick up some Empress models from the Bring and Buy at the Hammerhead show and some unpainted extras from my mate Rob. So in all it's due to folks generosity and an eye for a bargain that I've managed to collect quite a tidy army for both sides. Hopefully when this lockdown is over I'll be able to post up some pictures from our games at the club.
Last night at the club we had a crack at playtesting the new Gripping Beast 'Milites Mundi' rules. Originally designed for smaller scale battles (10mm, 6mm etc) it was decided by Simon and Lester to run a quick encounter game using 28mm.

This larger scale was fine and just meant that we had to reduce the size of the units. The main thing was to navigate the rules and work out what on earth we were doing.

Naturally the army lists for New Kingdom Egyptians and Hittites contained some interesting specialities. The use of 'chariot runners' adding an extra die for the Hittite assault chariots would show its worth later on. This, it seems, is the key to Milites Mundi: getting those bonus die and using them carefully to break down the enemy with pressure. It seems the more you initially succeed, the more bonus die you will receive for your next round. Giving an example of impetus I suppose.

On mine and Lester's side the Egyptians had taken some points to upgrade their troop choices. So we had a unit of Sherdan Guard and added armour and 'superior fighters' (I think that's the term) to the Chariot arm.

I noticed a while ago that there was much debate amongst Ancient wargamers about the previously assumed idea that chariot troops were some kind of wonder weapon - just bashing into the enemy line and scattering all before them. Rather they are now considered to have been used in a harrying and pursuit/flank attack role.

Disregarding such nuances at first I decided to just throw everything forward and see what happened. This....is a bad idea when using chariots against close order infantry! (I'm not a seasoned Ancients player by the way). We received a few bonus points for charging, superior fighters etc. But the close order infantry started on six dice per unit compared to our three per chariot. I had added an attached commander to get some more points, but together with some poor dice rolling from me it turned into a slugging match. The infantry had a distinct benefit from supports and the best I could hope for was pushing them back to break their battle line.

On the other side Lester was having similar issues, but at least he had better dice rolling in his favour. The crunch came when the center of the Egyptian army came under pressure and a unit of Marines were pushed back and the Hittite chariots hit them in the flank. Although in the last stages I managed a similar success by wheeling a chariot unit around and adopting the tactic I should have used all along, bashing into a disordered unit and wiping it out.

I really enjoyed the tension of the game, reflecting the push and shove of hand to hand combat as points are added and lost to the dice rolls.

This model was kindly donated to me by my mate Robin. I had committed myself to a Monday night game of Chain of Command - under condition that I brought along a painted Panzer IV for the Ardennes campaign. This photo is the build, which was pretty easy despite the superglue being a bit crap.

Next I undercoated it with GW Zandri Dust spray. Avoiding the usual Middlestone colour spray from Army Painter as I think it's a bit too yellow for my taste.

I intended to paint an ambush camo design, so the next stage was to paint circular type blobs in Vallejo Cavalry Brown and German Camo Green. Making these overlap in some places.

Then I added the dots around the blob patterns again using German Camo Green. Then dotted the blobs themselves with GW Zandri Dust.

I gave a heavy painting of GW Rhinox Hide across the tracks and the base of the armour. This was a quick and heavy brushing to cover all the tracks and wheels so I could avoid having to paint the tracks themselves in a black or grey metallic.

Next I did an ink wash all over the vehicle with GW Agrax Earthshade. Once dry I then did a quick dry brush across the tracks and wheels with Vallejo Light Mud. Gradually flicking the brush all over the vehicle with the same colour to create a worn look.

Finally I painted the MG's in black and then added the decals.

I have been dabbling with the Contrast paints again. Despite being highly sceptical at first they've now finally won me over. I think once you get used to them you can achieve some lovely effects in a very short space of time. Which is great if you have a huge lead mountain like I do. This Wargames illustrated Giants in Miniature character figure was completed in about 45 minutes. I'll try out some more figures in the coming days and post up the results.

For those interested. I used a combination of Instar and Games Workshop contrast paints. The full list is here:
GW Guilliman Flesh for the skin.
GW Agarros Dunes for the smock.
GW Snakebite Leather for the trousers and gun butt.
GW Creed Camo for the helmet, webbing, pouches and gaiters.
GW Black Templar for the gun and boots, chinstrap etc.
GW Creed Camo and Militarum Green 50/50 mix (or Instar Forest Green) for the camo splashes.
GW Wyldwood for the camo splashes.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14302453918877303074noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2074136687855286094.post-90118853587938693012020-01-22T08:47:00.000-08:002020-01-22T08:49:01.547-08:0028mm Northwest Frontier AfghansIn a break from my Wars of the Roses project I decided to try out some of the new Contrast paints from Games Workshop, and the latest similar product from Instar Paints. I may be doing a small review for Wargames Illustrated on the latter very soon.

The Afghans are Foundry miniatures and (I think) some Artizan. They had been knocking around in the unpainted pile for over a year, so it was an ideal opportunity to experiment with this apparently quick fire method of getting figures battle ready.

In all I managed to complete around eighteen figures in just one afternoon. That included a highlight of two on some. I must say I'm being slightly won over by the Instar product. The colour range is excellent and far outdoes GW on the colour choices.
I unboxed them for storage and then forgot which were Lancastrians and which were Yorkists. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter too much, as they should all suit their purpose. I finally got round to painting them over the festive period. Most of the flags are printed straight from the internet, while some are from Pete's Flags on eBay. The Edward IV command is actually assembled from the plastic Perry's Foot Knights box by the way, but the rest are metal.
This was managed partly by taking some of my paints to work and doing a bit during my breaks. I'm really pleased with these figures. Perry miniatures are very versatile and using the plastic boxes sets to achieve various poses, weapons and heads really makes a difference visually.

I've also included here a picture of my command figures. Originally a generic Perry's commander and standard bearer I found in a box, I painted him as the ill fated the Earl of Warwick himself.
My old one was a much larger 44 figure unit, but after reading an old Wargames Illustrated back issue which included some smaller Bosworth units fielded by the Perry's I decided on using their example. Units are mixed archers and men at arms at 50/50 with archers at the front initially who then fall back behind the men at arms after firing. The article states they would then normally draw their hand weapons to support the forward section in melee.

All the figures in the photos are Perry Miniatures plastics, with the Warwick banner by Pete's Flags (available from eBay).
Finished today. Bit of a rushed paint job, but I'm happy with it. The detailing on these figures are immense (check out the new Vikings range and compare them to the plastic Gripping Beast ones. Not knocking the latter of course).

Each Chariot pack comes as a set of three, so I'm really looking forward to painting the rest!
